The western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) of Guinea-Bissau’s Boé region exhibit a behavior not observed in any other wild ape population: throwing stones at tree buttresses, leaving behind distinctive piles. A recent study supported by Stichting Chimbo analyzed camera-trap footage to reveal previously undetected patterns, indicating the behavior may represent a culturally transmitted form of communication.
